About the Haversack

The Haversack is the blog of London-based journalist, editor and copywriter Dan Hayes.

Why the Haversack? Partly because the blog was first thought up on Haverstock Hill in North London and partly because, as any traveller will recognise, you can always find something interesting if you have a good rummage in a haversack.

For 15 years Dan travelled the world as editor of award-winning magazines such as Holiday Destinations, World of Travel and CNN Traveller.

During those years he journeyed along the Silk Road to Samarkand, learned dog-sledding in Svalbard’s polar night, swam with dolphins in the Red Sea and met more publishing deadlines than he can remember.

Following a masters degree in environmental and countryside management at Birkbeck, University of London, these days he mixes travel journalism with writing on a wide range of topics including news, sport, the environment and countryside issues.

In a parellel life he edits magazines for The R&A, Premiership Rugby and Harrods Aviation. He also works as a copywriter for print and web.
