War Horse walks in Dartmoor National Park

Dartmoor National Park is organising guided walks taking visitors to many of the locations that form the backdrop for the film War Horse.

The movie, which opens nationally in the UK on 13 January, tells the story of a Devon farm boy who braves the trenches of World War I in search of his horse, Joey – taken by the army to the Western Front.

Director Steven Spielberg said of Dartmoor: ‘There’s no place like it in the world – it’s pretty extraordinary country. I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse here.’
Visitors can find out exactly what he meant in the company of expert Dartmoor rangers on a walking tour that takes them to filming locations including Ditsworthy Warren House, Ringmoor Down, Haytor, Bonehill Rocks and Hexworthy Bridge.

There are two walks currently on offer. The first of these is on Saturday 21 January and will take guests to some of the locations used during the filming of War Horse. Also discussed will be what life on Dartmoor would have been like during World War I.

The walk will start at 10.30am and last for two and a half hours.

On Sunday 19 February there is another chance to visit this area on a three-hour walk, also beginning at 10.30am.

If they’d rather, visitors can arrange self-guided walking or cycling tours of the War Horse locations using a range of leaflets, maps and other publications produced by the Dartmooor National Park Authority.
Booking is essential for the War Horse walks and these can be made via the High Moorland Visitor Centre, tel: 01822 890414.

The Centre is open Thursday to Sunday 10:30am-3.30pm.
