England’s rugby union team may play some home Test matches at venues other than Twickenham to promote the 2015 World Cup across the country.
‘There is a tremendous appetite to
make sure this Rugby World Cup gets to as many corners of the country as we can
take it,’ said Andy Cosslett, the chairman of England 2015.
One reason for this is that organisers hope to sell almost 3 million tickets for RWC 2015.
‘If we fulfil our ambition to make
this the best World Cup ever, then I think we will be more than capable of
filling the stadia and selling 2.9 million tickets,’ Cosslett told a press conference at Twickenham.
‘We are hoping to make a profit of
£100million, maybe a bit more.
‘Taking rugby outside the traditional
rugby strongholds into places where we're fighting the battle against
Premiership football is something we see as a priority.’
Between 10 or 12 venues will stage World
Cup matches in 2015 although the final selection has yet to be made.
One certain venue is Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium; where Wales are likely to play a minimum of two pool matches.
Tournament organisers would like to include
London's Olympic Stadium on the roster but the venue's future is still under
discussion.
The pool draw for RWC 2015 will take place
on 3 December.
